Paul...Vermont Street

Paul is doing pattern making as part of a Diploma in fashion technology. “ There is a renewed interest in the construction aspects of fashion, in part because we’re now in a position where you have to do everything yourself.” Paul loves menswear primarily. “I’m doing a childrenswear study however, and am really enjoying it!” Paul wears Nike Blazers, and top by Danish designer Henrik Vibskov.

I couldn’t stop Gus talking about his leather bag. “Us Argentineans take leather goods seriously,” he says. Apparently it had been through the wars, and had struggled to find a good repairer here. “I’ve replaced the strap, and now the latch is broken. It’s never ending”, Gus laments. He is a tour guide.

Samy is Milanese, having been in Sydney for a few months – and involved in both fashion and modelling. “Why would you ever leave a place like Milan?”  I ask. “This part of the world makes such a refreshing change – so vibrant, fresh and new, it really is very cool.” Samy is thinking of checking out Melbourne to see what it has to offer. Only a Milanese could wear a top like this !

I was at the Ampersand cafe in Surry Hills, and I was browsing through this old poetry book. The cafe is a definite for book lovers. “What are you reading ? ” Lisa asked. ” We got talking about books, and it turns out she owned the cafe. ” My two loves are vintage books and coffee” she says, "so I’ve combined the two! ” Lisa wears Antipodium top and Stella McArtney pants. From this month METRO magazine. “I love downtown. With the supermarkets, and this area opening up, everything is near here, which is where it should be,” says Taka. He works on a magazine for Japanese living in NZ, called Gekkanz. Taka is a big foodie, who apparently makes his own home made pasta.

You see these bags around and about a bit. Quite an arresting design - fairly stark and simple, but effective. There are always particular designs or symbols that do the rounds. I've always found it quite fascinating which ones are picked up in peoples minds. Really like this shirt, rolled up - cool!

Mina is from Venezuela, also lived in Miami for a time, and we had a great chat on the street about Venezuelan politics. Mina is not a fan of President Hugo Chavez, the populist leader thats just been re-elected. A great chat...!
