The $100 pen & pencil art challenge !

Enter one and all ! I'll trial it this year, and if it all goes well will make it a larger competition. I've always loved pen & pencil illustratons - from doodling on my maths book, drawing Star Wars figures, to doing a fully fledged pencil portrait of a girl that I had a crush on at school. There is something so fun, so mysterious, so...earnest and endearing about pencil or pen line art. Email me your art, will put it up, and I will choose a winner ( a hundy bucks ) at the end of March. Conact on the side there, or email to: wallacejnr@ihug.co.nz

Danny and his necklace

Love this...I think Danny makes them, and I'm not sure if they're made out of lego, or if they're for sale, but a real eye catcher without being wacky. They're cool !

A day at the Polo

I'm off to that ceremony of WASPishness that is the Polo on Sunday. The BMW Polo Open. My first polo and Tabitha and I are looking forward to it. I always thought it was quintessentially British ( I always think of Camilla Parker Bowles for some reason ) but it is in fact quintessentially Iranian. They started it in the 5thC, have a rich record of it, through poems and art and Polo is theirs. India cottoned on to it and developed the modern game in Manipur - where to this day the worlds oldest polo club 'The Imphal polo ground' resides. And from there the British nurtured their taste in the game. It appears that the English Texans were the first to play the game Stateside, and of course Ralph Lauren came along with his Polo shirts and boom - the WASP tradition is born. Fashion wise, you're in a field. Keep it smart, but casual. A nice belt. Shirt. NO Hawaiin shirts. It's not that type of party.

Company of Strangers...have a shop.

Now, if I happened to be in Dunedin this evening, this is what I'd be going to. I like the Company of Strangers work ( Sara Aspinall worked for NomD for some time) - one of the better things to come out of Dunedin for a while. And now they have their very own store, from 5.30 pm today...320 George Street.

Topknot crrrrraziness...

Just as an offside, I've been reading a most riveting book called Trial of the Cannibal Dog by Dame Anne Salmond. That, and Open by Andre Agassi are my two reads this year. Anyway...it is a book about Captain Cooks journey around the Pacific in the mid 1700's, and the top knot as a style looms large. I didnt realise, but those stones on the heads of massive Easter Island statues that look out to sea? Top knots. You see... top knots were seen as a high status symbol, so only the warrior class in many of the Pacific Islands could wear their hair in a top knot. There is a great account of some of the island peoples trying to get the British sailors to do their hair in a top knot in this book. Here's to the top knot, alive in 2013.

So where's the music these days...

Right here thankyou. I chanced across this track tonight. New Zealand band Kids of 88, with exactly two things going for them. A really awesome vid, and a straight up slammin' tune - The Drug. What a hook, and what pastels! Reminds me a bit of Sierra Leone by Coconut Rough.

If you loved an artist enough to tattoo...who ?

Hayley in Queen street. I was intrigued by her tattoo "1748 - 1825. " That is the birth and death date of her favourite artist, Parisian Jacques-Louis David. He was a painter of great renown, as his style of history painting helped end the 'frivolity' of the Rococo period, pulling art back to the realm of classical austerity. One of David's most famous works, "The Death of Marat" (1793), portrays the famous French Revolutionary figure dead in his bath after an assassination, and have included the painting below.

If you loved an artist enough to tattoo the dates, who would it be ?? A great idea - must be a great talking point at parties. Mine would be Giotto. Maybe Hotere.
